The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team could be building a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
